1970  Noel John Williams, Ph.D. ’75, died of cancer at his home in El Dorado Hills in May 2005. He was 57 years old. Dr. Williams worked for the sustainable development firm CH2M Hill for 29 years, making significant contributions to environmental projects in California and worldwide. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Phyllis, and his daughter, Kristanna.

1971  David Martin has formed an engineering firm, David Martin & Associates, in Kirkland, Wash. The firm specializes in managing transportation design projects.

1972  Susan Heckly, director of the Lindsay Wildlife Museum’s wildlife rehabilitation hospital in Walnut Creek, combines her love of art and science by photographing the recovery of injured animals. The images, which are used to inform rehabilitation staff and volunteers about wildlife injuries, are now also on display as art at the County Administration Building in Martinez.    Robert Kuckuck, Ph.D., was appointed interim director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Kuckuck, an expert in nuclear weapons testing and treaty verification technologies, is a former National Nuclear Security Administration official.

1973  Carey Laine received his doctorate in psychology from the Professional School of Psychology in Sacramento. Laine now works as a professor at Yuba College and as a psychological assistant with plans to obtain his license.    Eugene Steffey, Ph.D., was one of three recipients of a 2005 Alumni Achievement Award from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Steffey, professor of anesthesiology at the school, was recognized for his research and artful clinical practice, which are improving the safety of anesthesia and recovery rates for animals.

1974  Mark Gailey is currently a resource specialist teacher for juniors and seniors at Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, where he lives.    Charles Wachob, J.D. ’77, was appointed a judge in the Placer County Superior Court. Wachob had been a partner in the law firm of Leupp, Wachob & Woodall since 1981 and an attorney for the city of Auburn since 1983.    Eric Wente, M.S., has been elected chair of the Wine Institute, a trade group representing California wineries, for the 2005 fiscal year. Wente advocates sustainable wine-growing practices in the industry. As chair of his family’s winery, Wente Vineyards in Livermore, Wente oversees the winery and vineyards, restaurant, golf course, a land- and vineyard-development company and a working cattle ranch. He and his wife, Arel, have two children who both work at the winery as well.

1975  Frank Ercoli heads the trauma and critical care services at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. He also founded the annual Palm Springs Smooth Jazz Festival, which raises money for Hanson House, a home-away-from-home for the families of critically ill patients. Ercoli has received numerous honors, including the 2003 Riverside County Medical Association’s Physician of the Year award.
