1943  John William Melendy of Soquel died in February 2005 at age 83. Mr. Melendy joined the University of California Cooperative Extension in 1946 and was a farm advisor in Santa Cruz County in 1947-1976. During World War II, Mr. Melendy served in the Navy and commanded a sub-chaser in the Pacific. He served on the Santa Cruz County school board for 10 years, was a member of the farm bureau and remained active in the Congregational Church of Soquel. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Catherine Coops Melendy; his daughters, Deborah Norman, Dorothy Nicholson and Karen Melendy-Zahn; his son, James Melendy; and six grandchildren.

1946  James King was inducted into the California Agricultural Educators Hall of Fame in June. King taught and directed the agriculture program at Santa Rosa High School for 33 years.

1949  Robert Allen Ehling died in October 2004 at the age of 76 in South Carolina. Mr. Ehling was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from Furman University in Greenville. A widower, he is survived by three daughters, four siblings and one granddaughter.

1951  Hugh Popenoe continues to teach, even after his retirement from the University of Florida. He also has the largest water buffalo herd in the United States and is president of the American Water Buffalo Association.

1957  Harry Colvin Jr., Ph.D., retired from UC Davis after serving as a professor of physiology for 25 years. He and his wife, Marie, a teacher in the Davis school district, raised a daughter, Sally, who now works for UC Davis’ Department of Pediatrics, and a son, Bill, who works for the Heavenly Valley ski resort.    Jan Wilson Kaufman died in December 2004 of cancer and pneumonia. She was 69 years old. Ms. Kaufman was the first graduate of UC Davis’ art program and enjoyed a career in which her work was showcased in Germany, Emeryville, Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco. An award-winning painter and photographer, Ms. Kaufman studied at Oxford University in England and traveled in Europe, Central America and the Far East. Survivors include her two sisters.

1965  Dennis Garber retired after 34 years at UC Davis in land, air and water resources. Garber lives part time in Davis and also manages a farm trust in Modesto.

1966  Chris Gansberg retired after 16 years as Alpine County supervisor but continues to ranch. His wife, Faye Harrison, is a retired teacher. They have three children, seven grandchildren and another grandchild on the way.    Gene Martin retired after 36 years with IBM and two years with Hitachi. He and his wife, Mary (Brence) Martin ’66, live in Los Gatos and remain active volunteers and travelers. Their older son, Nathe, is a captain in the U.S. Army stationed in Iraq, and their younger son, Scott Martin ’99, works in Berkeley as a researcher.    Juliet Mevi-Shiflett, M.S. ’69, chairs the nutrition department at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. Her true passion, however, is art, and she spends much of her time painting in her Berkeley studio.
