1990  Amy Sutherland married ceramic artist Otis Bardwell in September. She works in the financial aid office of Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, assisting chiropractic and acupuncture students with job development. Navy Lt. Cmdr.    Steven Pollack served on the USS Kitty Hawk, which provided support during the Iraq war.    James Van Pelt, M.A., had his first short-story collection, Strangers and Beggars, named Best Book for Young Adults from 2002 by the American Library Association. His short stories were also recently reprinted in The Year's Best Science Fiction, The Year's Best Fantasy and The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror.

1991  A book by James Brooks, M.A., Ph.D. '95, director of research at the School for American Research in Santa Fe, has won three leading prizes in American history. Captives and Cousins: Slavery, Kinship, and Community in the Southwest Borderlands (University of North Carolina Press) has received the Bancroft Prize of Columbia University, the Frederick Jackson Turner Prize of the Organization of American Historians and the Francis Parkman Prize of the Society of American Historians. The book, Brooks' first, was initially his UC Davis dissertation.    Katherine Hansen works as an attorney in the appellate unit of the criminal justice section of the Colorado Attorney General's Office. She and her husband, Brian, have two children, Alexandra, 2, and Braden, nearly 1.    Susan Simitz will soon be returning to California after spending the past three years teaching English to high school students in Ube, Japan.

1992  Diane Beeken is coach of the cheerleading squad at Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks. Her team won top honors in one of the divisions at the USA National Cheerleading Competition in Anaheim earlier this year. Beeken, who is also an English teacher at the school, was herself a cheerleader while at UC Davis.    Jill (Everett) Hornbeck and her husband, Neal, had twins--a boy and a girl--in December. They also have a 2-year-old son. Jill teaches interior design classes part time at Las Positas Junior College in Livermore.    Erin Kvistad joined law firm Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel as a member of its business and transactions group. She will be based in the firm's Pleasanton office. Kvistad was named by the East Bay Business Times as one of its top 40 business leaders under 40.

1993  Mike Lorilla and his wife, Jennifer, are expecting a second son, due in August, who will be joining older brother, Jordan, 2. Lorilla is the regional investment management and trust manager for the Mechanics Bank in Roseville. He says he enjoys teaching and playing rugby with the McGeorge Ducks.
