1970  John Kleppe, Ph.D., received the inaugural Olympus Lifetime of Education Innovation Award from the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance at a March ceremony in Portland, Ore. An electrical engineering professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, Kleppe has created curricula to promote innovative thinking and entrepreneurship, and is the founder of manufacturing company Scientific Engineering Instruments Inc., based in Sparks, Nev.    Jeremy Janes, M.A., died in April 2006 of lung cancer at the age of 63. Mr. Janes had been serving as the communications representative for the American Association for Retired People in Madison, Wisc. A native of the United Kingdom, Mr. Janes moved to California after marrying Helena Ellis. After receiving his master’s degree in French from UC Davis he taught at Dunn School in Santa Ynez and worked for the Community Action Commission in Santa Barbara. He is survived by his wife, Helena, two daughters, a son and one granddaughter.

1971  David Mutti, D.V.M. ’73, died of cancer in April 2006 at the age of 56. Dr. Mutti began practicing veterinary medicine in Santa Barbara following his graduation from UC Davis. In 1991 he became the owner and hospital director of Santa Barbara Pet Hospital where he continued to practice until November 2004. Dr. Mutti was well known for his compassion and skill with patients and his dedication to employees as a teacher and valued mentor. He is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughter, Alexa; parents, Richard and Margaret; and siblings Robert, Barbara, Donald and Caryl, all graduates of UC Davis.

1972  Paul Brydon was named chief financial officer for Catholic Healthcare West’s Northridge Hospital. He and his wife, Colleen, live in Malibu and have three daughters: Lauren, a junior at the University of Washington, Seattle; Brooke, an upcoming freshman at UC Santa Cruz; and Christie, a ninth-grader.    Richard Fobes, of Portland, Ore., is the inventor of VoteFair ranking, a new voting method that identifies the ranking of choices from most popular to least popular, and is the author of the recently published book Ending the Hidden Unfairness in U.S. Elections (Solutions Through Innovation).

1973  Mike Byrne was named 2006 Livestock Man of the Year at the Grand National Rodeo in San Francisco in April. Byrne is a fourth-generation cattle rancher, continuing his family’s 175-year-old Klamath Basin operation.    Phillip Ellis has joined global insurance broker Willis Group Holdings Limited as the firm’s global energy practice leader. Ellis lives and works in London.    Douglas Light, Ph.D. ’81, and his U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service codling moth team received an award for superior efforts in technology transfer at an ARS award ceremony in February.

1974  Victor Convertino, M.A., Ph.D. ’81, received the Citation Award from the American College of Sports Medicine for his contributions to exercise science, including developing training for astronauts and diagnostic devices for medics on battlefields. He is a senior research physiologist for the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.    Richard Frank, J.D., was named the first executive director of the new California Center for Environmental Law & Policy at UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law. He leaves a 30-year career in California government and his current position as the top adviser to the state attorney general.
