1938 Jean Brown Iskra recently celebrated her 88th birthday with a round of golf, brunch in Palm Springs, a movie and a surprise birthday party. 1939 James Leathers died in September 2003 at age 84. He worked as a farmer in Yolo County and served on agricultural and environmental committees, as many as 22 at a time. Mr. Leathers will be remembered for his public service, which included 40 years as chair of the Federal Land Bank board in Yuba County. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons Timothy, Patrick, Michael and Scott; daughter Joan; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 1940 Warren Tufts died in August 2003 at age 86. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Mr. Tufts returned to his father's ranch near Winters and acquired additional properties and began growing apricots and peaches for fresh markets. He went on to market his own fruit, eventually selling it around the world. His father, Warren P. Tufts, was a professor of pomology at UC Davis. 1946 Donald Hefner died in June 2003 from heart failure at age 84. He worked for Spreckels Sugar for many years, rising to the position of district manager. He was active in a number of community organizations and served on the board of Woodland Memorial Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Lucille and children Donna DeVries, Debbie Moore and Scott Hefner. He was preceded in death by his son, Lynn Hefner. 1949 Bill Seyman, M.Ed. '62, died in July 2003 of complications from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases at age 80. He worked for more than 30 years at the UC Extension Service in Santa Clara County where he specialized in row crops. Survivors include wife Aloha, daughters Elaine '80 and Sharon '82, and his granddaughter, Selena. 1956 Donald Dahlsten died in September 2003 at age 69 from skin cancer. An insect biologist, he taught at UC Berkeley for three decades and researched the biological control of insects, helping fight California's pest problems with predatory insects as an alternative to chemical pesticides. Survivors include his wife, Janet, two daughters, two stepchildren and 10 grandchildren. 1957 Ralph Boyd and his wife, Georgene, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He worked in commercial real estate for 40 years before his retirement in 1996. They have five children and eight grandchildren. 1961 Gerald Ling, D.V.M. '65, has received the alumni achievement award from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where he has taught for the past 35 years. Ling helped establish the small-animal emergency and small-animal outpatient services at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and was previously honored with a 2002 faculty teaching award. • John O'Connor, M.A. '63, a University of Florida art professor, had 53 paintings selected for a solo exhibition titled Conceptual Realism 1968-2003. It was held at the Pensacola Museum of Art and the University of West Florida Art Gallery. 1965 Mitchell Bush, D.V.M., was awarded the alumni achievement award by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine for his work in zoological and comparative medicine. Bush is chief of veterinary services at the Conservation and Research Center of the Smithsonian National Zoo, assistant professor of comparative medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School and is a visiting scientist at Kruger National Park in South Africa.
